The modern day hoody as we know it today began life way back to the Middles Ages period of history during which time monks wore a cowl with an attached hood
Clothing historians point to the 1930s as the time of the emergence of the hoody when clothing company Champion made the garment for warehouse workmen, to protect them from freezing temperatures. It quickly caught on among the working classes.
When Claire McCardell made the hoody a focal element of her designs for clothing, the hoody quickly earned widespread popularity and appeal and adoption as an item of casual fashion
The recent popularity of the hoody, and the extent of it's adoption in every day life, is thought to dates back to the 1970s and the hip hop culture. The hoody provided cover and instant anonymity and is popular for criminals. This loaned the hoody an edgy cool. Popular culture quickly took this on. For example in the boxing hero movie 'Rocky' the hoody is a central part of the image. The hoody gained kudos as a gritty urban clothing item before very long. Since then the hoody has been adoptedby the urban poor in both the UK, the USA and parts of Europe. and has gone on to be an incredibly popular and widespread item of clothing.
Many companies now design and make hoodys. A great example is the G Star range of hoodies. For examples check out G Star Hoody
